Otto attended high school in Anklam, earning below-average marks. But in the fall of 1864 he entered the provincial vocational school in Potsdam and excelled, achieving the best examination scores in the history of the school. After working the following year as an apprentice in a machine factory, he entered the Berlin Trade Academy (now the Technical University of Berlin), graduating in 1870 with a degree in mechanical engineering. The Franco-Prussian War had broken out 10 days earlier, and he enlisted in a Prussian regiment. After his one-year enlistment, he turned down an offer of a position at the Trade Academy in order to work for the C. Hoppe machine factory in Berlin. By the time of his mother's death in 1872, Otto was already poised on the brink of a successful career. However, Otto was simultaneously developing a second, parallel career: work on the principles of heavier-than-air flight.

＞飛行実験のパイオニアとなったドイツの技術者で飛行研究家。コウノトリの飛翔を研究し、鳥のように羽ばたいて飛ぶことを考えていた。1881年からグライダーを製作して飛行実験を繰り返し、その総数2000回。そのグライダーは体重を移動してバランスを保つ方法でコントロールされていた。リリエンタールは翼のキャンバーの効果を立証したことでも有名。1886年には動力機関による飛行も計画されていたが、その前にグライダーで墜死してしまった。ライト兄弟にもっとも影響を与えたのもリリエンタールであることは間違いない。リリエンタールの墜死事故のニュースがライト兄弟を刺激し、飛行機の開発に踏み切らせた。またライト兄弟は、フライヤーの製作、実験にあたって、リリエンタールの飛行データを非常に参考にしている。リリエンタールの存在がなければ、ライト兄弟はなかったのではないだろうか、とも思わせる。 ＜
